There is an imposing, gated detached house in central London. My friend is working there. The doorbell rings, and she takes delivery of a package. An hour later, the doorbell rings again — another package. This happens every day. Some days, as many as seven packages are delivered.

The owner of the house, a middle-aged woman, is rich. Her husband is a top corporate lawyer earning more in one day than most of us earn in one year. She can buy whatever she wants, whenever she wants, and she does.

She is in pain. And every time she orders something online, often in the wee small hours of the morning, she gets a small dopamine hit.

She has a shopping addiction, and no amount of parcel deliveries makes her feel better for any length of time. Because the root cause of her addiction, as with all addictions, is emotional pain or trauma that she has not dealt with.

I came, I wrote, I conquered. That last bit might not be true, but at least I am putting up a good fight.
