I used to believe in Santa Claus - until I didn’t

I used to believe owning a dog was more trouble than it was worth until we got our first dog, and I fell in love with him. Dealing with dog vomit when he had scavenged mouldy piles of food, the ugly smell of wet hair after walks in drenching rain, incontinence when he became an older man: nothing was too much trouble. It was all worth it.

I used to believe that letting a dog sleep in bed with you was unhygienic and plain wrong. And then I got a lurcher and changed my mind.

I used to believe I would be happy when I had a beautiful home to live in until I learnt that happiness is not linked to possessions, even expensive ones with spectacular gardens.

I came, I wrote, I conquered. That last bit might not be true, but at least I am putting up a good fight.
