ROBERT CHARLES

God how I loved you
Right from the start
A friend, a friend
For me

I gazed at your name
And saw anagrams
Of all I thought could be

Saw breath and beach
And heat and heart
And stable, cheer
And reach

I saw coral and larch
And close and best
And search and shore
And rest

But when you went off me
And broke my heart
And I had another look

How could I miss it?
Why didn’t I see?
It was staring me right in the face

I saw crash and cheat
And brash and beast
Cobra and roach and stab

I saw secret and starch
And leech and breach
Bore and chore and hearse

A little too late I spotted it
You’re a U short of
Treacherous

PS: Robert Charles is also an anagram — of the person’s real name.

I came, I wrote, I conquered. That last bit might not be true, but at least I am putting up a good fight.
