Don’t ask me why, but I was uncomfortable being called Mum or Mummy, and my children often called me by my first name, Annie.

One of their friends had stayed overnight, and I was driving them to the park for some fresh air when I overheard this conversation:

“Who is Annie?” asked the child.

“That’s my Mum’s name”, replied number one egg, Jake.

“What’s your Mum’s name?” asked Sam, number two egg

“Mummy,” came the response.

“Yes, but what is her name?” asked Sam again.

Silence

“I think it is Jane,” said Jake.

“Oh,” said the child. “I wondered who that Jane was that my Dad kept going on about.”

I came, I wrote, I conquered. That last bit might not be true, but at least I am putting up a good fight.
