Context: I used to write weekly emails to my children after they left home. Below is an extract from one from 2016

The Characters:
Roger: my husband
Carola Asif: our next-door neighbour
Asif: her husband, who is known by his surname for some reason.
Jalil: their son

I got an email this morning from Carola — they had to borrow our internet connection yesterday:

Dear Annie and Roger,

Thanks to the use of your connection, Jalil got his work and online check-in done, and was all set for his flight back.

Asif has now bypassed a dodgy stretch of wiring &/or connection, and so far, all is well. If you are disturbed by strange noises and vicious swearing, it will probably be us trying to move the desk, carpet, underlay etc., and finding we need to shift a floorboard (or two).

Roger replied that if they needed any help, to let him know, as he is a dab-hand at vicious swearing.

I came, I wrote, I conquered. That last bit might not be true, but at least I am putting up a good fight.
