There is so much wisdom in this piece and I loved your repetition of the words of Richard Rohr. I believe all addiction is a response to pain and trauma and I love how you were able to reframe the story of your grandmother and see her as she was: someone in pain. My own mother was an alcoholic and I grieve that there was not the help and understanding available then that there is now. For it killed her at the age of 47.
