I have heard that “May all your dreams come true” is a curse in China. I have a great deal of respect for the sentiment.

I learnt the truth of it the hard way.

I have a penchant for choosing the hard path, and I wouldn’t have it any other way: it has made me more resilient. I have had to learn to pick myself up and try again. This is part of my story.

Back in the early 1990s, I met a woman who inspired me. She had decided to write down what she wanted in a man. She wrote just three things: he had to have long blonde hair, be into yoga and be totally into her.

It took her a few months, but eventually, she met the man she had dreamed of. Two months later, it was all over. “He was so into me that I felt suffocated in the end,” she told me.

I decided I would not make the same mistake she had made, and I would be far more careful and demanding.

I started my list — it ran to two pages of A4. I was determined I wouldn’t get anything wrong or miss out on anything important. I covered all the bases. I started with the essential things: must be able to make me laugh and things of that ilk, then moved on to compatibility in all areas: I wanted someone who had children, preferably older than mine, someone with a job he…
