That is a good question, Jen. I think the writer makes it clear that she felt judged by Dave and that was enough for me. We all have quite sensitive antennae I think for when we are being judged. Anyone who suggests that someone with weight issues "Just needs to lose weight" is by definition suggesting that it is in their power to simply adjust their food intake and all will be well. Which is a judgement on their lack of willpower or self agency. But that is not the case. Weight gain is a hugely complex issue and cannot always be turned around by diet and exercise. All addictions are a response to pain and trauma and require deep healing and empathy. Unsolicited advice is always toxic. And there is a fine line between therapist and terrorist.
