Such sad news, Lauren. My heart goes to all involved, too. Thank you for highlighting the need to be vigilant around water. The signs that someone is drowning are usually quiet. If you see someone with their head just above the waterline, quietly gulping like a fish, that is a real danger signal. It is also dangerous to approach them - there is a real danger they will drag you under in their panic. Ideally, you need an object to extend to them - a flotation device or an oar. We lived on the coast for 7 years and drownings were all too common.
