“It’s the police!”

My bank robber boyfriend’s shout jolted me awake at 4 am. He hopped on one leg, struggling to get into his jeans amid the noise of repeated bangs and doorbell rings.

“What do we do?” asked Chris, with panic in his eyes.

“Well, let them in,” I replied, wondering quite why he hadn’t thought of that himself.

Thirty seconds later, there was a policeman in my bedroom who, point blank, refused to get out and let me dress in privacy.

I suppose they thought there was a risk I might fling myself out of the window or flush my vitamins down the toilet.

I discovered later that the police had been watching my house for weeks. Their intrusion even had a name: Operation Bumble Bee.

The night before the raid, I’d received a phone call from an acquaintance.

“Annie, it’s Bubba. Can I have a bed for the night?”

“Sorry, I’m all full, Bubba.”

I came, I wrote, I conquered. That last bit might not be true, but at least I am putting up a good fight.
