OMG. This article is fantastic. I cannot agree with you more about the importance of ritual. I have been sitting on an idea for a story about it for too long. You have got there before me. Bravo. And I do believe in burning things too. The most powerful ritual I do regularly is a letter writing exercise and the burning at the end is crucial. What's fascinating is how some things go up in flames and disappear in a flash. And others require two blasted firelighters before I can get them to disappear.
