I have recently moved and decided I should be brave and attempt to meet some real-life people locally. An online search led me to a writing group holding a meeting in the library, and I decided to attend. It did not go well.

“Are you published?” was the first question I was asked. “How much do you make on Medium?” was the second. I was uncomfortable. My anxiety increased when they set up a camera so that others could attend via Zoom. I tried to find a seat angled away from the camera.

A writing prompt had been emailed in advance. It was “Impossible Nightingale”.

I am a cryptic crossword fanatic. If you see the word “impossible”, it is an anagram indicator. So, I decided to look at the anagrams and write a poem. At the end, I learned something important. Stay tuned for that.

Impossible Nightingale

Halt the lightning, hail ’n’ gale
Let the ninth angel alight
Let the aging lighten the tale
Angling the light at night

Let the hating haggle and lie
Let the eight, the ninth, giant lie
Let the hating gent net ale
Let the genial gent inhale

I came, I wrote, I conquered. That last bit might not be true, but at least I am putting up a good fight.
