I think if you click on the little circle of you in the bottom left hand corner, it brings up a list and there is a "Refine recommendations" option there. It may help to sort out what Medium recommends to you.

For what it is worth, it took me 5 months before my income was paying for my membership but now, at 7 months into the partnership programme, i have made enough to cover 2 full years of membership. It is hard work - you have to make time to respond to other people's work and build a following but i love Medium.
