I got goosebumps reading this Benighted. I am so sorry your mother had the reaction she did: my heart went out to you. But it sounds as if your grandparents did much to repair any damage. I imagine them heaping all the love and care they felt for you onto that flower so that it would grow new roots. It bloomed and survived as you have done.
