I find this to be a very useful thing to ask myself in all sorts of circumstances.

I was at school when cursive was taught and indeed required, but I could never get the hang of it. In the end, there was a special meeting and a test, where I proved that I could write faster in block than my peers could write in cursive.So they left me to it. Later, I learnt shorthand (the second most useful thing I learnt after typing) and now my notes are illegible to ANYONE except me.
