Oh my God. What have I done?

This is a screenshot of my follower numbers taken yesterday morning:

And this is how my follower count looks now:

I have lost 1,737 followers overnight.

I say “lost”, but in truth, it was a deliberate cull. I thought I would have a spring clean because there are so many:

• old and dormant accounts on Medium
• fake followers who are following tens of thousands of accounts
• lots of non-paying members who can’t read what I post, anyway

And I decided it would be a good idea to get a more realistic idea of follower numbers. Which is probably around 20.

What was I thinking?

It was a mammoth task.

The first round

I decided that on the first run-through of my follower list, I would click on the non-paying members to check out their status. I quickly established a method:

Glance left for when they were last active and what sort of content they posted.
