How to Leave a Private Message on Medium

I tend to use the private messaging feature on Medium if I spot a spelling or grammatical error that interrupts the flow, for me, as a reader. I only tend to do this once unless the writer gets back to me and says they appreciate the input.

Most are grateful.

Sometimes it is nice to leave a Private message for other reasons. Here is how to do it:

Highlight the error or any other piece of text.

This brings up the Medium editing box. It should look like this:

Can you see the symbol on the far right side with the speech bubble and padlock? Click on that, which will bring up a little box you can type in.

When you have posted your private message, a little star will appear on the right-hand side of the text (but only you, the recipient and the editors of any publication you submit your work to, will be able to see this).
